Morning workouts: why the 6 a.m. opening is worth it
We open at 6 a.m. on weekdays, and people who switch to morning training rarely switch back. Here is why, and how to make the change stick.
We open at 6 a.m. on weekdays, and that is not a formality: at six there is already life in the gym. People who switch to morning training rarely switch back. There are good reasons for that.
Why mornings work
- The room is emptier. The peak is between 4 and 8 p.m. on weekdays, in the morning there is no queue for machines, and your favourite bar is free.
- Nothing can get in the way. An evening workout gets eaten by overtime, family plans, or a simple “not today”. A morning workout cannot, at 6 a.m. there is nothing to cancel it for.
- You are done. The workout no longer hangs over your day, and most people find their mornings at work sharper, not sleepier.
- It can be cheaper too. The morning gym pass is valid on weekdays between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. (and all day on weekends), and costs less than the full-day version, see the price list.
How to switch, gradually
The person who decides on Monday to train at six every day gives up on Thursday. Instead:
- Start with one or two mornings a week, keeping your other sessions at the usual time. If it works, expand.
- Pack everything the night before, bag, clothes, water. Mornings run on as few decisions as possible.
- Train lighter than usual for the first two weeks. Your body is learning a new time slot; records can wait.
- Move bedtime earlier instead of cutting sleep. Six a.m. training is not compatible with midnight series-watching, everyone learns this one quickly.
Not just the machines
The timetable has morning group classes too, if your morning needs company and a led workout, start there. And if you head to work afterwards: the gym is in the city centre, on Attila utca, for many people it is literally on the way.
The first week is hard. The second is strange. In the third you catch yourself being sorry when you miss it.
